Abstract

The paper wants to illustrate that one of main scopes in which the archival community has to answer to challenges given to the long-term digital preservation is the need of a critical revision of the traditional archival paradigm. The thesis has proved by a case study: that’s represented by the public system of long-term digital preservation managed by “Polo archivistico regionale dell’Emilia-Romagna” (ParER). This case study is analysed with reference to the functions in which the preservation activity has articulated and the relationships that the custodian has with the creators that use its services. It emerges so the need for a revision of the traditional archival paradigm, with regard to some aspects: the life cycle model, the custodian role, the record concept as an absolute stability, the concept of archival description and mediation, the tools for the access to digital archives by users.
